July 1: President Bill Braun - 2009-10 Goals
|
Senator Jim Rosepepe talked about the last legislative session from the Senate's perspective. Following the recession of 1991-92, several actions taken at that time, such as closing the CP Police Barracks and the conversion of state employees to contract workers by the University of Maryland have been rectified. The 1.5 billion confronting the State was mollified by the Federal economic stimulus package. Teacher layoffs in Prince George's County were avoided and Medicaid was not restricted. A number of shovel ready projects were funded. Congressman Hoyert was able to have included in the stimulus package additional support for BARC and the Patuxent Wildlife Center. The bill to move toward digitized medical records (sponsored in the House by Joselyn) was passed. The governor was able to provide monies to avoid tuition increases at the UM System.
